Gifford's Ice Cream & Candy Co. has a long history in D.C.: A Gifford's ice cream parlor opened in Silver Spring in the 1930s. Then, a Bethesda store and other suburban locations followed. All were old-time soda fountains with marble-topped iron furniture, serving classic ice cream flavors, candies, house-made chocolate sauce and new-at-the-time treats such as banana splits and sodas. Although the original two locations closed about 20 years ago, a die-hard fan of the place bought the Gifford's name and recipes and reopened it in 1987. It has changed hands several times since then, improving steadily over the years. The ice cream and candies are made fresh daily, and high turnover and limited distribution mean the goods are always as fresh as they are tasty. The company has worked to develop new flavors to bring in customers such as Grand Marnier coconut, blood orange sorbet, cinnamon, Andes chip, Mexican vanilla and coffee Oreo. No alcohol available. Serving during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours daily.
