Who would ever have thought that the white noise of an espresso maker would be the anthem for a generation? Step into a Firehook Bakery and Coffee House, based in Chantilly, Va., and with a number of D.C. area locations, for that Pavlovian moment when you hear the whisper of steam and your blood thrills to the sound. Indulge in a pastry or cookie — lemon coolers, macaroons or a chocolate espresso chew — and taste what a real bakery using premium ingredients can turn out. At lunch there’s a selection of salads and sandwiches — these change from one location to another, and there’s no printed menu. So just march in, order with confidence, and knock 'em back with a Dr. Brown’s soda. (There's no alcohol served.) Firehook breads are the slow-fermented, old-world type. So if your hometown doesn’t offer this marvelous type of bread, tuck a couple of loaves/baguettes/ciabattas into your suitcase — they stay fresh for several days. Generally serving breakfast, lunch and early dinner hours daily. Hours vary by location.
