Just around the corner from South Grand neighborhood's restaurants and shops, MoKaBe's Coffeehouse (named for the trio of owners Mo, Kathy and Becky) is one of St. Louis's most progressive and offbeat coffeehouses and cafes. Mainly a hangout for a diverse mix of students and locals, MoKaBe's remains a friendly, casual spot for all. Non-smokers can enjoy a smoke-free area in the loft, and there is large outdoor seating area that faces Tower Grove Park. The menu consists mainly of healthy and wholesome sandwiches, homemade baked goods and specialty coffee drinks. The affordable, all-you-can-eat vegetarian- and carnivore-friendly Sunday brunch is a primary draw, as well. (Former chef Patrice Mari, who popularized the brunch, has moved on to Shangri-La Diner.) Brunch dishes change weekly, but quiche, French toast with cream cheese filling and raspberry topping, scrambled eggs or tofu are among the choices, along with fruit and baked goods. We recommend mushroom bacon -- actually thinly sliced mushrooms fried to a golden crisp -- as a meat alternative. Regular bacon also is offered, though. Beyond the health-conscious choices, desserts include a decadent chocolate bread pudding made with croissants and semi-sweet chocolate. No alcohol served. Voted Best Coffeehouse in the 2007 Sauce magazine readers poll. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily until 1 am. Sunday brunch served 9 am-1 pm.
