Situated in the heart of St. Louis' famed Italian-American neighborhood known as The Hill, the original Amighetti's Bakery & Cafe on Wilson Avenue has been serving authentic Italian-style subs since 1921. Now with two newer area locations in Rock Hill and Hazelwood, the quaint, modestly decorated deli features an old-fashioned soda fountain and adjoining bakery. The headliner of Amighetti's hefty sandwiches – each overflowing with multiple meats, cheeses, peppers and olives – is the signature almighty Amighetti Special, made with fresh-baked bread and plentiful layers of ham, roast beef, Genoa salami, brick cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, pepperoncini peppers and the special house dressing. Another specialty is the delicious Little Bit of Italy sub made with garlic butter, Genoa salami, brick and American cheeses, black olives and onions. More prevalent Italian fare such as pasta entrées, pizzas and salads are also offered. Dessert includes excellent cannoli, cheesecake or a variety of treats from Amighetti's Gelateria (ices, gelato and ice cream) to the left and Amighetti's Bakery (pastries and such) to the right of the deli. Expect a crowd at lunch. Beer and wine available. Kids menu. Serving during breakfast, lunch and early dinner hours Tue–Sat. Closed Sun-Mon.
