Since its 1990 opening, Szmania's remains a popular and vibrant neighborhood bistro and bar, filled with regulars young and old. This German-inspired establishment is owned and operated by chef/owner Ludger Szmania and wife Julie, whose presence create a constantly friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The combination Northwest-contemporary American, German and global menu is heavily influenced by Szmania's German upbringing and his European culinary training. For dinner, starters include smoked salmon bruschetta and the Alsatian cheese tart (a puff pastry with Muenster cheese, caramelized onion and bacon bits). Try the house-smoked salmon, sturgeon with a slice of pancetta, seared ahi tuna with red Thai curry sauce or the decadently rich crab and corn chowder. A German standout is jagerschnitzel, breaded and fried thin pork cutlets under mushroom gravy. Kids' menu. Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch Fri, dinner Tue–Sun. Closed Mon.
