Husband-and-wife team Ronald and Debra Wise run Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que, a place high on taste, but low on aesthetics. Located just south of Safeco Field, this lunch-only takeout joint looks more like a run-down gas station than a popular restaurant, except during the midday rush when famished workers and baseball fans line up for the coveted sandwiches. The Texas-style barbecue beef, pork and ham sandwiches are a desirable feast, and eating them without bathing in barbecue sauce takes quite a bit of skill. (Note to novices: Leave the white shirts at home.) While Debra takes your order at the window, Ron is in the back piling mounds of barbecued-to-perfection meat onto buns. The menu is decidedly simple: big, dripping sandwiches of beef, pork, or ham. The meat is either shredded or chopped and served with a hot sausage link if you prefer. All orders come foil-wrapped with a stack of napkins and plastic silverware. The outdoor picnic tables out front fill up fast, so be ready to take your deliciously messy meal to your car or nearby Elliott Bay Park. No alcohol available. Cash only. Serving lunch Mon–Fri. Closed Sat–Sun.
