The Essential Baking Company's charming pair of cafés have casual but sophisticated atmospheres, reminiscent of quintessential Parisian cafés but with a decidedly arty, Seattle vibe. Exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, high-beamed ceilings and large windows surround a knotty pine lunch counter and a handful of tables. While the cafés offer an uncomplicated lunch and dinner menu and a bevy of luscious desserts, it’s their artisan breads that make repeat visits truly essential. There’s a rotating list of seasonal breads such as sweet potato pecan or Irish soda bread in addition to a formidable list of breads regularly offered including baguettes, ciabatta, focaccia and raisin pecan. These breads serve as the base for hot and cold sandwiches such as grilled cheese, Black Forest ham and braised turkey. Also on the menu are soups, stews, salads, quiches and pizza. For serious sweet tooths, there are to-die-for pastries, muffins, scones, cookies and dessert breads in an array of fruit, chocolate and nut flavors. No alcohol available. Generally serving during breakfast, lunch and early dinner hours daily. Hours vary by location.
