The twentysomethings and thirtysomethings of San Francisco are often found at ThirstyBear, a combination brewpub and Spanish tapas restaurant said to be the country's first such culinary combination. With a name inspired by reported incidents of bears breaking into campsites or bars and drinking beer, ThirstyBear originated in 1996 and offers nine varieties of house-brewed beer daily. Brews include Howard Street IPA, caramel Brown Bear Ale, Kozlov Stout, pilsner-style Polar Bear Lager and Valencia Wheat with a hint of orange. In addition to beers, ThirstyBear also features a variety of Spanish wines, single malt Scotches and Spanish brandies at the downstairs bar. As for the dining menu, a few favorite tapas include a potato and onion omelet, sautéed prawns, crab and Manchego cheese dip served on sourdough, and a cheese assortment served with walnut bread. A few heartier dishes include Spanish meatballs, baby back ribs and paella. Desserts such as cherry empanadas, pumpkin seed brittle and sangria sorbet provide a delightful finish to your meal. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Sat, dinner nightly.
