One of pro basketball's all-time great centers, Nate Thurmond began his career in the early 1960s with the San Francisco Warriors (now the Golden State Warriors), and after 14 years in the NBA, returned to the city to open Big Nate's BBQ. From afar, Big Nate's looks more like a mechanic's shop than an eatery. Once inside, it's clear from the two huge brick smokers that this place is all about barbecue. Barbecued chicken, pork ribs, beef brisket, beef links and pork shoulder sandwiches are flavored with sauces ranging from mild to hot. (When in doubt, order the ribs, and you can request the sauce to be on the side.) Family-sized Team Meal dinners offer a three- and four-meat sampler or a slab of ribs, and come with potato salad and coleslaw. Try the sweet potato pie for dessert. There are a few tables inside the restaurant, but most orders are for carry-out. Delivery available. Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Voted Best Barbecue in the 2009 Bay Guardian readers' poll.
