The Peruvian-born Castillo family, headed by owner/executive chef Martin Castillo, opened Limón in 2002, and it became so popular that they moved the Nuevo Latino restaurant around the corner to more spacious digs just two years later. The newer location on Valencia Street features an open kitchen, a mezzanine level and contemporary design in citrus shades of orange, green and yellow. The upscale nature of the restaurant extends to the menu, with lighter cooking techniques and artful presentation applied to old Peruvian favorites. Starters include sautéed mushrooms in a light garlic butter sauce, and empanadas filled with beef, onions, olives, raisins and eggs. Entrées include pargo rojo (red snapper served with coconut rice), several types of seviche, and parihuela – fish, calamari, clams, scallops, mussels and prawns in a red pepper and wine tomato broth. Dessert offers amaretto tres leches cake and chocolate cake served with white chocolate pisco cream and a cherry port reduction sauce. Reservations suggested. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Closed between meals on weekdays.
