At Citizen Cake, desserts often look more like sculptures than cakes, such as the eye-catching Deluxe Cake, which is sliced after baking and reassembled in an abstract manner. Owner and James Beard-nominated executive chef Elizabeth Falkner, trained in fine arts, opened the contemporary bakery in 1997, and today the patisserie is a full-service restaurant with lunch, dinner and a weekend brunch. Various salads, pizzas and sandwiches are featured at lunch. Dinner entrées include pan-roasted sturgeon, saffron-sausage paella and a roasted portobello sandwich with Havarti cheese. Of course, these dishes are merely the prelude to the main event: masterpiece desserts such as Rose Petal Crème Brûlée, apple galette and the Citizen Cookie Plate. Weekend brunch options include sugar-glazed doughnuts with house-made jam, poached eggs on ham and roasted potato hash, and French toast with cocoa nib banana butter. Full bar. Patisserie hours: 8 am-10 pm Tue–Fri, 10 am-10 pm Sat, 10 am-6 pm Sun. Restaurant and bar hours: lunch 11:30 am-2:30 pm Tue–Fri, dinner 5-10 pm Tue–Sat. Sat–Sun brunch 10 am-2:30 pm. Closed Mon.
