At Citizen Cake, desserts often look more like sculptures than cakes, such as the eye-catching Deluxe Cake, which is sliced after baking and reassembled in an abstract manner. Owner/executive chef Elizabeth Falkner, trained in fine arts, opened the contemporary bakery in 1997, and today the patisserie is a full-service restaurant with breakfast, lunch, dinner and a weekend brunch. Various salads, pizzas and sandwiches are featured at lunch. Dinner entrées include pan-roasted sturgeon, saffron-sausage paella and a roasted portobello sandwich with Havarti cheese. Of course, these dishes are merely the prelude to the main event: masterpiece desserts such as Rose Petal Crème Brûlée, apple galette and the Citizen Cookie Plate. Weekend brunch (10 am–3 pm) options include sugar-glazed doughnuts with house-made jam, poached eggs on ham and roasted potato hash, and French toast with cocoa nib banana butter. The related Citizen Cupcake, located in the Virgin Megastore downtown, serves drinks and more dessert favorites. Falkner was nominated for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2005. Voted Best Dessert in the 2008 7x7 San Francisco magazine and Bay Guardian readers poll. Full bar. Serving breakfast and lunch Tue–Fri, dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Mon.
