Solana Beach mainstay Nobu Gourmet Japanese Restaurant does a splendid job with sashimi and sushi as well as traditional Japanese fare, all in an upscale but family-friendly environment. First, some words of clarification: Nobu is not to be confused with the like-named fusion restaurant with branches in New York City, L.A., Vegas and the like, although an outpost of this chain opened in San Diego's new Hard Rock Hotel in the spring of 2007. The long-standing Nobu will likely survive any confusion just fine, though, thanks to a well-prepared and sizable menu, accommodating service, and a heated outdoor patio. Start with yakitori (chicken skewers with teriyaki sauce), steamed dumplings, deep-fried soft shell crab or a bowl of egg custard soup. Entrées include sukiyaki (with choice of meat), shrimp and vegetable tempura, or the grilled fish of the day. Sushi and sashimi choices include the basics (California roll, rainbow roll and yellowtail sashimi) as well as more exotic choices such as tuna belly, abalone or octopus. Try green tea or plum wine tempura ice cream for dessert. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Closed between meals.
