The highly successful coastal California chain The Fish Market, with nine restaurants throughout California and Arizona, has been serving San Diego's downtown waterfront since 1989. The Fish Market's owners insist they are seafood people who just happen to be in the restaurant business, as catches are flown directly from their autonomous fishery and partner oyster farm in Northern California. The oyster bar and cocktail lounge provide comfortable places to hang out and drink or dine, and the sushi bar is a particular highlight in San Diego. You'll find an extensive list of sashimi and sushi, smoked fish, mesquite-grilled seafood, baked and steamed shellfish, crab and lobster entrées, and fresh seafood pastas. Specials change daily based on what's biting. Rotating sauces (mango salsa, soy garlic, or the classic tartar) ensure variety. Fresh catches also are available for retail sale. The cavernous, casual main eatery is joined by its upscale second-floor Top of the Market restaurant, with a larger wine selection, special entrées and a more rigid dress code. (Collared shirts for men recommended at dinner). Also, there's the Little Fish Market restaurant on Fenton Parkway, which does away with The Fish Market's oyster bar and cocktail bar and emphasizes quicker-serve specialties such as clam chowder, fish tacos, sushi rolls, fried fish and shellfish. Full bar. Kids menu. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
