Ocean Beach's lively Kaiserhof restaurant emphasizes authenticity in its extensive German menu, outdoor beer garden and full bar replete with German beers and wines. Start with herrings in sour cream sauce, cucumber salad, a wurst sausage sampler or a bowl of goulash soup. Sandwiches include the grilled Kaiserhof with sliced bauernwurst, sauerkraut and melted Swiss on a Kaiser roll, or a hot New York-style pastrami on rye. Recommended entrées include wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, roasted pork shank and sautéed rainbow trout. The potato pancakes are a highly touted side. Try the house-made apple strudel for dessert. Sunday brunch (11:30 am–3 pm) includes German pancakes, eggs Benedict, steak and eggs, omelets, and poached salmon. Voted Best German Restaurant in the 2007 San Diego Magazine readers poll. Reservations suggested on weekends. Full bar. Kids menu. Serving lunch Fri–Sun, dinner Tue–Sun. Closed Mon.
