La Fonda on Main, which opened in 1932 at its Main Street location, is steeped in tradition, having served clientele including world leaders FDR, Lyndon Johnson and the King of Siam himself, Yul Brynner. In 1997, local restaurateurs Cappy and Suzy Lawton purchased the eatery and made serious renovations, resulting in a fresh, uncluttered space complete with an upscale patio. Among the stellar dinner entrées is the Pescado Veracruzana: a choice of fish filet or shrimp, sautéed in Veracruz sauce made with fresh tomatoes, olives, chiles and capers. The menu also features enchiladas de mole Xiqueño: two chicken enchiladas drenched in mole sauce and covered in sautéed vegetables and queso. Voted Best Enchiladas in the 2007 Express-News readers poll and Best Margaritas in the critics poll. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily.

The Riverwalk
The roots of San Antonio's thriving restaurant scene date back several generations, as evidenced by the time-honored appeal of Mexican cuisine at La Fonda on Main (circa 1932) and the chicken-fried steak from DeWese's Tip Top Cafe (circa 1938).
