Inside the colorful, playful Austin-based chain Amy's Ice Creams, things are constantly busy. Cameras flash in the old-fashioned photo booth. Spoons bang on the counter as servers noisily mix in toppings. And ice cream literally flies through the air as servers fling your custom blend into a cup or cone. It's not all novelty appeal here, though. Amy's offers wonderful ice cream. With more than 300 possible flavors, only seven staples are available at all times, including Mexican vanilla, coffee and three chocolate flavors (white, dark and Belgian). Others, such as blueberry muffin, nut bread, biscotti and peanut butter honey sandwich, rotate. For something a little different, try an alcohol-flavored ice cream such as amaretto, Kahlua, and even Guinness and Shiner Bock. (Although flavored with real alcohol, there is no need to worry about driving under the influence of ice cream: Each serving contains only tiny amounts.) With numerous toppings and three different sizes available, the possibilities for your customized treat are practically endless. Seating is limited, so some patrons may have to stand when the place gets particularly busy. No alcohol available. Serving during lunch and dinner hours daily. Late-night Fri–Sat.
