Near the historic Tower Theater on Broadway sits another piece of Sacramento history in the making, the Tower Cafe. Owner James Seyman founded his folksy little eatery on Earth Day 1990, with the intent of bringing the hearts, minds and appetites of the city's diverse population under one roof. And if you can find it behind the front-yard foliage, you'll discover just such a clientele sitting among the eclectically decorated interior and what many have deemed Sactown's best outdoor dining. Specials from across the globe range from Irish Guinness beef stew and Florentine ravioli (spinach- and ricotta-stuffed noodles in white wine-pesto cream sauce) to Texas skirt steak and a tasty Malaysian chicken sandwich (a hoisin- and ginger-marinated breast topped with jicama and pineapple). Where Tower Cafe particularly shines is with its weekend brunch, which boasts a much-hyped version of French toast that reaches levels dangerously close to nirvana, heaven and utopia. (You get the idea.) The crunchy exterior with the warm, gooey custard inside draws a crowd on its own. And with its impressive selection of imported beers and wines from around the globe to boot, Tower Cafe keeps its customers coming back for a world of reasons. Kids' menu. Beer and wine, sangria and soju (a clear, Korean alcohol similar to vodka) cocktails available. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Brunch served 8 am-2 pm Sat–Sun (and holidays). Voted Best Breakfast and Best Sunday Brunch in the 2009 Sacramento magazine readers' poll. Voted Best Outdoor Dining and Best Breakfast in the 2008 Sacramento News & Review readers' poll.

Sacramento's somewhat-underrated restaurant culture includes a number of much-praised contemporaries, although no eatery in town is more revered than Willie's Burgers & Chiliburgers.
