A fresh coat of paint and change in ownership has breathed new life into The Shack, formerly known as The Sub Shack, an East Sacramento institution for more than 30 years. This former hole-in-the-wall deli expanded its menu and hours when original founder Ralph Neel handed over the reigns to husband-and-wife team Gary and Jen Sleppy in 2005. The couple has since remodeled the space, bringing a sense of hipness to this old-school favorite. They have also added a weekend brunch menu. Most locals know The Sub Shack for its delicious six- or eight-inch sandwiches, stuffed with four kinds of cheese (mozzarella, provolone, Swiss or cheddar) and a plethora of freshly sliced meats (barbecued beef, pastrami, Italian salami, rotisserie turkey and grilled chicken). The pepper steak and onion sub is by far the best-selling item on the menu – and for good reason. Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner Mon–Fri. Sat–Sun brunch 8 am-2 pm.
