Snatched up in July 2006 by Davis Enterprise – also of Spinnaker and Tarantino's in San Francisco – Sudwerk Privatbrauerei Hubsch (Sudwerk Private Brewery by the Hubsch family) has remained a well-respected name in American microbrews since its opening in 1990. A love for great beer quickly developed into the most successful brewpub in the United States in terms of volume, now producing about nine million bottles annually. On any given night, crowds populating the large patio prove the local popularity of the German-style microbrews. Up to 10 beers on tap include the brewery's own versions of lager, hefeweizen, pilsner and marzen, the last being a particular favorite. Wednesday night pint specials bring in tons of business, particularly from the UC-Davis crowd, so plan your visit accordingly. With the recent change in ownership, the once heavily German menu has been overhauled in favor of more broadly appealing American sandwich/steak/pasta fare. But alongside the Buffalo wings and Boston clam chowder, a few sausages and potato pancakes still remain. Live music Fri–Sat. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
