Some might say that the treats at Freeport Bakery look too pretty to eat. Clearly those individuals have never tasted the goods, because locals have no problem digging into the assortment of decadent cakes, tortes, tarts, pies and Danish made from scratch daily. This neighborhood patisserie seats only a few dozen customers in scattered indoor and outdoor tables, so make sure to arrive early weekend mornings before the rush. Though everyone has an individual favorite, imagine such delicacies as the Fleur-de-lis (alternating layers of buttermilk and fudge cake filled with raspberry preserves and frosted with buttercream) or the Seville Marnier (orange poppy seed cake doused in Grand Mariner with chocolate whipped cream layers and whipped chocolate ganache frosting). Don't miss the outstanding freshly baked bread, as well. Some mistakenly overlook Freeport's breakfast and light lunch menu because the bakery is so exceptional. But keep in mind that entrées will fill your daily nutritional quota so that individual slices of the custom cakes or pies seem quite justified. Voted Best Bakery in the Sacramento magazine 2008 readers poll and 2007 News & Review readers poll. No alcohol available. Serving during breakfast and lunch hours daily. Early dinner hours Mon–Sat.
