A family-run establishment for more than 30 years, El Novillero remains a favorite Sacramento hangout for great Mexican eats in a uniquely hip atmosphere. Crowds of locals pack the Franklin Boulevard location known for its somewhat randomly decorated interior (think ceramic cow heads) and general fiesta ambiance (think delicious margaritas). The Davalos family takes pride in the fact that everything served in their restaurant is made in-house daily, from the unique sauces down to the very last tortilla chip. That results in one of the freshest, most authentic Mexican menus around, and each single portion is large enough to serve two easily. The house-specialty carnitas are always a safe bet, but any combination of the classic burritos, tacos, tamales, chimichangas and tostados proves absolutely delicious. Salsa comes in three tried-and-true varieties – mild, medium and hot – so make sure to trust those labels. Reservations not accepted. Full bar. Kids menu. Serving lunch and dinner Mon–Sat. Closed Sun and between meals.
