Brothers Fred and Matt Haines have found much success with their Standing Room Only, Inc. group, which operates several upscale-casual restaurants in the Sactown area. The flagship 33rd Street Bistro led the pack upon its 1995 opening and since has become an East Sacramento staple. Loyal patrons pack this quintessential neighborhood spot, particularly during weekend breakfast-brunch (8 am–2 pm), for its folksy ambiance and affordable fare. Chef Fred Haines uses his tenure in the Pacific Northwest as inspiration for his gourmet menu of New American creations infused with comfort food classics. At 33rd Street, chicken potpie and meat loaf fit right in alongside Alaskan king crab risotto and Dungeness crab cakes with a cayenne aioli and red pepper currant sauce. Fresh salads, wood-fired pizzas and panini round out the lunch and dinner menu, while breakfast offers a short but delicious list of egg dishes and morning bistro choices such as smoked apple chicken sausage, berry griddle cakes and hazelnut waffles. A no-reservations policy often makes for long waits, so those in-the-know try to go during off-peak hours. Kids' menu. Full bar. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
