To some, there's nothing better than a night spent dining out at a great restaurant, except for maybe a night spent dining out at two great restaurants. Shaba Shabu houses both Thai and Japanese eateries and offers the shabu-shabu style of cooking (thin slices of meat are boiled tableside in seaweed broth, then dipped in a variety of sauces). The décor of the Japanese side reflects the simplicity of its purist method of cooking, and the Thai section maintains an earthy, antique feel that complements its exotic, perfumed culture. The Thai fare, which has been hailed as some of the best in the region, combines sweet-and-sour, spicy and subtle flavors in an extensive and creative menu. It includes such delectable favorites as Chiang Mai lamb (four chops topped with a basil-vegetable mixture in a chili sauce) and Samui Seafood (shrimp, scallops, squid, tuna and green mussels stir-fried with peppers in a spicy sauce). A bar separates Shaba Shabu's Thailand from Japan and is the only spot in the restaurant where you can select choice items from both sides. DJ Fri and Sat nights at 8. Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner nightly. Voted Best Sushi in the 2008 Metro magazine readers' poll.

The Triangle region of North Carolina has become the epicenter of what national food magazines have dubbed the New Southern movement, perhaps best exemplified by the shrimp and grits popularized at Crook's Corner.
