Italy awaits just five minutes north of the heart of Chapel Hill. Well, not exactly. But top-notch Il Palio Ristorante effectively embodies all the lavishness and romance of Italian culture, operating from the very posh, very refined Siena Hotel on East Franklin Street. Opened in 1987, Il Palio has raked in some extraordinary praise, earning Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence, a recommendation from Condé Nast and AAA's prestigious Four Diamond rating. The stately dining room reflects this celebrity: Live piano music (or classic jazz on Fridays) accompanies a hushed atmosphere, while rich fabrics, sleek table settings and hand-carved furnishings set a standard of elegance reminiscent of an Italian villa. But the true luxury at Il Palio is the exemplary food and drink. Examples include pan-roasted sweetbreads and grilled branzino. Such dishes are complemented by careful wine pairings from the 400-plus bottle wine cellar. Reservations suggested. Full bar.
