Irregardless Café has been a mecca for Triangle vegetarians for the past quarter-century, but even those with omnivorous appetites flock to chef/owner Arthur Gordon's haven for refined palates, owing largely to two unique qualities that set it apart from the competition. The first is the mellow atmosphere: A roomy dining area, cozy booths, fun fish mobiles, original art, live music and dancing after 9 on Saturday nights give this bistro an unpretentious air, despite its first-class menu. The second is the carefully selected produce and meats presented in innovative combinations, oftentimes with Middle Eastern undertones, and specially designed each night by Gordon and his team of top-rate chefs. For example, vegetarians vouch for the portobello polenta or the Greek pasta sauté. Seafood lovers can enjoy seared tilapia or grilled salmon with fennel and leek cream sauce.
