In 1956, Rose Naftalin opened a New York-style deli and bakery on N.W. 23rd Avenue. This Portland institution closed in 1992 but has reopened as Rose's Restaurant and Bakery, expanding to additional locations with the new owners relying on Rose's original recipes. Try any of the signature Reubens: the traditional Bronx Reuben with paper-thin kosher pastrami or the Rookie with shaved turkey breast. They all come on grilled dark rye with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing. Try other sandwiches such as the Royale with hot pastrami topped with egg salad on rye, or the Rose City with sliced turkey breast, lettuce, cream cheese and specialty cranberry mustard on sourdough. Burgers, ham, roast beef, the grilled vegetarian, chopped chicken liver and French dip sandwiches are also available as well as chicken matzo ball soup and fish and chips. Sides include potato salad, kosher dill pickles, fries and coleslaw. The colorful entrée salads hold their own against the sandwiches, too. Try a shrimp and avocado salad or the Nob Hill salad with field greens, red grapes, toasted almonds, raisins and Gorgonzola, covered in fat-free balsamic basil dressing. Dinner entrées include pot roast, meat loaf, chicken Parmesan and seafood fettuccine, with prime rib available Friday and Saturday nights only. For breakfast, don't miss cinnamon rolls, egg dishes, lox and bagels, cheese blintzes and house-made hashes. For dessert, grab a slice of raspberry poppy seed cake, a Napoleon or a giant éclair.
