Owner Alem Gebrehiwot makes yearly trips to Ethiopia and brings back plenty of coffee, spices, beer, beans and other goodies to help keep the robust North African menu authentic at his Queen of Sheba restaurant. What isn't imported is the fresh local produce that Portlander's love. When you walk in, you'll see a few tables and some coolers along with African flags and other cultural paraphernalia. The bar and more tables can be found in the more dimly lighted back room, where patrons can be seen scooping up family-style meals with pieces of injera, a sour, spongy bread – no silverware necessary. The menu includes favorites such as chickpea cracker stew, lamb sautéed in hot berbere sauce, lentil and okra stew, and zilzi tibs, which are beef chunks stewed in a spicy chile sauce. Beverages include Ethiopian iced tea and specialty cocktails such as the Greenfire Kiss. Reservations suggested for groups of six or more. Full bar. Serving lunch Thu–Sat, dinner nightly.
