Ken Forkish has prided himself on producing rustic, European-inspired, hand-formed loaves of bread and other bakery goods since opening Ken's Artisan Bakery & Café in an old carpet factory in 2001. The small Pearl District space on the corner of 21st and Flanders attracts the masses with a variety of bread options, including country brown, walnut bread, country blonde, pain rustique, baguettes, ciabatta, apple bread (Saturdays only) and French rye (Saturdays only). Cozy up to a cup of Free Trade espresso and, when available, try spinach, chocolate or pear croissants. Fresh tarts are made based on what ingredients are on hand and fresh that day, so availability varies. Selections can include seasonal berry tarts (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry) on vanilla bean pastry cream; baked fruit tarts with apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots and pears; tart lemon tarts; Valrhona chocolate tarts; and holiday tarts such as the galette des rois, made during the January Epiphany season. A variety of puff pastries are also made depending on what fillings are available that day. The cafe serves bistro-style soups, sandwiches and cheese plates. And Forkish has recently opened Ken's Artisan Pizza on 28th Avenue. Voted Best Bakery in the 2007 Willamette Week readers poll. Reservations not accepted. Beer and wine available. Serving breakfast, lunch and early dinner daily.
