Since 1996, chef/owner Brett Hoffman and wife Rose have been bringing the authentic taste of Germany to their restaurant, Haus Murphy's, in the heart of Historic Downtown Glendale's antique district. Stop by this cozy storefront eatery for a schnitzel or a brat between shops, or simply come to marvel at Glendale's own claim-to-Hollywood-fame: The large, central soda fountain hails from the set of the 1985 James Garner/Sally Field romantic comedy, Murphy's Romance. And floor-to-ceiling photographs chronicle the city's history. As for the menu, hearty portions of Bavarian specialties include the likes of kassler kotelett (smoked pork chops), beef rouladen (stuffed with pickles), and a first-rate pork and beef goulash. Add nine varieties of schnitzels – particularly recommended are the Balkan and the Jäger – and eight types of sausage – try the Wollwurst or Weisswurst, both veal brats. Worthy sides include sauerkraut, potato salad and fried potatoes. Wash it all down with a cold draft Spaten, Hefeweizen or Warnsteiner beer, best enjoyed in the festive beer garden. Desserts include house-made apple strudel and hazelnut tart. Reservations suggested. Live entertainment Fri and Sat nights. Kids' menu. Full bar. Serving dinner Tue–Sat, dinner nightly.
