Wildflower Bread Company is passionate about its loaves. A handful of these neighborhood bakeries – à la the European café – have popped up across the area, bringing the scent of rising dough and a warm, airy atmosphere to many locations in addition to the Scottsdale base. Free of additives or preservatives and baked fresh on location daily, bread comes in all shapes, sizes and flavors – from nine-grain and sourdough to cinnamon raisin and pasilla chili rye. There are also baguettes, bagels and biscotti, croissants, scones and muffins. Wildflower even offers a "bread salad," yeasty slices paired with tomatoes, mushrooms, red peppers and garlic, marinated in red wine vinegar and olive oil and served atop field greens. Obsessed with grains as it is, this contemporary neighborhood café is much more than just a bakery. The full menu also offers lunch, dinner and one of the best home-style breakfasts in the area. Breakfast options include cinnamon raisin nut French toast, banana walnut pancakes, and a feta and roasted vegetable frittata. Lunch and dinner offer a full range of gourmet soups, salads, sandwiches and pastas. Particularly recommended are the turkey and Brie sandwich and the butternut squash ravioli. Ask for the house-made soup in a bread bowl, as the crusty sourdough proves the perfect complement to whatever the day's selection. A variety of café drinks and smoothies are available. Grab a baguette from the self-service basket, and 10 percent of the profits will go to the local library. Or, bring the kids in on Wednesday afternoon between 3:30 and 4, and they'll receive a free cookie and a glass of milk. Voted Best Bread Store in the 2007 Phoenix magazine readers poll. No alcohol available. Kids menu. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
