Many old-fashioned soda shops appear as if they're straight out of a storybook. With the Sugar Bowl in Old Town Scottsdale, that's actually quite accurate. The Family Circus creator Bil Keane drew on his experiences from this 1950s original as inspiration for his phenomenally successful daily comic strip depicting American family life. Not much at the Sugar Bowl has changed since that time. The full-service menu offers soups, salads and sandwiches, but the real reason to go is the sweet selection of sugary goodness. Sherbets, sodas, shakes, scoops, floats and more than 14 flavors of malts are largely portioned and hugely delicious. Much recommended are the banana splits, one with raspberry sorbet and Turkish coffee ice cream, but it's hard to beat a good old-fashioned sundae. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
