Delux is nothing like your average burger joint. With a single location in the Safeway strip mall at 32nd and Camelback, the hip, urban atmosphere is a far cry from a standardized fast-food restaurant or roadside diner. Loosely based on the popular Father’s Office eatery in Santa Monica, Calif., Delux stems from Phoenix restaurateur Lenny Rosenberg, whose vision has produced other totally hip restaurant hits Zen 32 and Blue Burrito Grille. Delux features a large, central community table, trendy flatware and unisex bathrooms. Forty imported and domestic beers are on tap daily without a Bud or Miller among them, and wine and trendy martinis appear on the menu as nonchalantly as fries and sodas. As for the signature Niman Ranch beef patties, choose from either the Standard Classic (with American, jack or cheddar cheese and lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle) or the Delux (with Maytag blue and Gruyere cheeses, caramelized onions and bacon). The bun is optional for either. Regular fries, sweet potato fries or a combination of the two arrive in miniature shopping carts, with one order large enough for two or three diners to share. Delux also offers several salads, including roasted beet and tomato-mozzarella. Panini and other sandwiches round out the menu, as well as desserts that include banana split lava cake or milkshakes made with Häagen-Dazs ice cream.
