When the soul is singing for some sweet, Southern-style seafood, locals head down the highway to Apopka's The Catfish Place. A lone albino catfish – perhaps the only one of his friends to avoid the frying pan – swimming despondently in an aquarium serves as a mascot of sorts for this favorite Florida stop for down-home cooking. Don't feel shy about wearing your overalls here: This rustic little joint remains a sanctuary for time-honored Southern traditions such as deep-fried seafood and fall-apart vegetables. Comfort food from the sea ranges from scallops and lobster to frog legs and gator tail. Catfish is the obvious headliner here, but your best bet might be a sampler platter – including alligator, frog legs, fried shrimp, scallops and clams – to get a taste of all of Catfish's best. All meals come with a side of hush puppies and two choices from a strong supporting cast of Southern standards such as grits, cheesy hash browns and tangy coleslaw.
