One of Orlando's worst-kept secrets, Black Bean Deli has been bringing its down-home island fare to the Winter Park neighborhood for more than two decades. This local darling's unassuming strip mall location and tiny interior don't stop the locals from pouring in, especially during lunch hours. Most diners order for takeout, but a few counter-top stools are available. Dismissing recent Latin culinary trends for more standard Cuban fare, Black Bean Deli offers no-frills sides, sandwiches and platters at incredible values. Long, flat sandwiches wrapped in wax paper are served warm, the most popular being the Cuban, featuring sweet ham, roast pork and melted Swiss cheese. With black beans and rice as obligatory sides, dinner platters are also tempting, most served with sweet fried plantains and an iceberg salad. Sides alone could make a meal, particularly for vegetarians. Imagine the likes of vegan, chicken or beef empanadas, sweet corn tamales, and mashed potato fritters. Flan is a deliciously safe bet for dessert. To drink, forgo traditional sodas for one of the Cuban varieties. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner Mon–Fri. Closed Sat–Sun.
