What began as a small, white hamburger stand in Choctaw has become a larger brown building specializing in authentic German cuisine that now serves more than 40,000 patrons a year. Founder and German immigrant Christel Turek thought about returning to Germany while her family was down on its financial luck, but fortunately, she and her family spent their last $300 on the hamburger stand in March 1976. The original entrées included hamburgers, burritos and just one German item, wiener schnitzel. Today, any night at this family-run business provides a festive atmosphere, but on the weekends, a band plays acoustic guitars and accordions. Entrée choices still start with the schnitzels (veal, beef, chicken or pork), which besides the ever-popular wiener schnitzel are also offered with cream sauce or with buttered mushrooms. Stellar sausage selections include bratwurst, knackwurst and cevapcici (house-made beef sausages). Roast pork loin, pork chops, rump steak and goulash soup are among the other offerings. Entrées include sides such as fried potatoes, potato dumplings, sauerkraut and spatzle (German pasta). The week after Labor Day each year, the restaurant hosts a three-day Oktoberfest with food, drink and contests. Voted Best German/European Restaurant in the 2007 The Oklahoman readers poll. Wine and beer available, including many German varieties. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Sun–Mon.
