Founders Bill and Mary Braum started this growing Oklahoma-based chain of combination soda fountain, grill and grocery stores in 1968. From the outside, Braum's looks like any other fast-food chain where you can pick up a burger, fries or an ice cream cone. But since the company ships its own ingredients and products to its stores across Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri every other day from their own farms and production plants, everything is exceedingly fresh. (Braum's limits store openings to a 300-mile radius from headquarters in Tuttle, Okla.) As for the renowned ice cream, try a banana split or a sundae with almonds or pecans roasted in the bakery, where the cones are made as well. Double-dip sundae flavors include hot fudge, caramel, cherry, strawberry, chocolate, buttered pecan, German chocolate, chocolate marshmallow and peanut butter. You can choose Butterfinger, chocolate cookie and M&M mixes, among others, to be blended into your vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Custard-style or regular soft frozen yogurt is also available. From the grill, breakfast items include the usual bacon and eggs variations, bagels with cream cheese, hash browns, cinnamon rolls and country-fried steak. During lunch and dinner, grill favorites include the jalapeño pepper jack cheeseburger and other burgers, chicken strips, salads, floats, smoothies, malts and shakes. Voted Best Ice Cream in the 2007 The Oklahoman readers poll. No alcohol available. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
