When Oakland landmark Fentons Creamery opened for business in 1894, the ice cream was served from the back of an old wagon. Today, Fentons Creamery & Restaurant is located in an actual building on Piedmont Avenue, where it continues to make some of the biggest, messiest ice cream sundaes on the West Coast. All ice cream is made on site, and on any given day there will be 40 flavors to choose from. The Fenton's Special is humongous: With vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and toasted almond ice creams, strawberry, pineapple, chocolate fudge and caramel sauces, the entire dish weighs more than three pounds. Another popular sundae is the Black & Tan, made with toasted almond and vanilla ice cream swirled with caramel and chocolate fudge. Other flavors include coffee ice cream with cookie dough, Swiss milk chocolate, Rocky Road, maple nut, raspberry swirl, peppermint and cherry vanilla. Ice cream can be ordered in sundaes, cones, shakes and malts, with cookies, or in a root beer float. The restaurant also serves diner favorites such as the house-specialty crab salad sandwich plus several varieties of burgers, hot dogs, grilled sandwiches, fries and salads. Breakfast is offered Fri–Sun mornings with Belgian waffles, pancakes, potato pancakes and various egg dishes on the menu. Fentons also offers free ice cream production tours.
