First-time visitors to Bette's Oceanview Diner in Berkeley will know soon enough, based on the line out the door, that it's widely considered to be one of the best breakfasts in the Bay Area, as many weekend breakfast-goers wait up to two hours for a table. Styled like an old-fashioned diner, black and white checkered tile covers the floor, a neon sign overlooks the booths, and chrome finishes decorate the bar. But Bette's is not simply for the nostalgic: A conglomerate of business executives, families, tourists and students make up the patronage, plus a jukebox plays everything from modern country to opera. Classic diner grub such as pancakes and sandwiches are interspersed with Southwestern and California creations, most made with organic local ingredients. Bette's is well known for its fluffy soufflé pancakes, made with whipped egg whites and topped with banana rum, apple brandy, fruit or chocolate. Other breakfast options include scones, muffins, potato pancakes, French toast and buttermilk waffles. Huevos rancheros, lox egg scrambles, corned beef hash with poached eggs and fluffy omelets round out the breakfast menu. Lunch offers salads, soups and sandwiches such as goat cheese and roasted bell pepper or chicken with jack cheese and pasilla chiles. Kosher franks and fish tacos are also available. Avoid the wait by eating at an off-peak times (breakfast is served all day), or order next door from Bette's To Go. Beer and wine available. Serving breakfast and lunch daily.
