Though the name Holy Basil refers to a specific exotic species of the herb said to counter physical, chemical and biological stressors, most avid Thai food followers hold any kind of basil in sacred regard because of its potent flavor and its contribution to the cuisine. After eating at this East Village restaurant, such enthusiasts for sweet and spicy accents will not leave disappointed. Unlike your quaint neighborhood Thai kitchen, Holy Basil establishes a decidedly romantic and elegant ambiance, with very dark lighting, high ceilings, candles and lush red curtains. Given the chic atmosphere, the low prices are a welcome surprise. Start with a green papaya salad or steamed mussels in a Thai-spiced white wine sauce. Curries are particularly popular, such as Holy Basil's rendition of green curry or the shrimp and scallops panang curry. And for heat seekers, there's always the kee mao (rice noodles with holy basil leaves, chicken, shrimp and chili pepper) or the very spicy pet kaprow, sliced crispy duck. Full bar. Serving dinner nightly, late-night Fri–Sat.

Best Thai in NYC
Top 100 Restaurant, New York City
"This is one of the best Thai restaurants in the city, turning out highly spiced, beautifully balanced dishes like green papaya salad, elegant curries and delicious noodles. The dining room looks more like a beautiful church than a restaurant."
—The New York Times
"You can't go wrong with any of the curries, from the delicate kang massamun to the more daring green curry, kang kiew warn."
—New York magazine
"If you prefer a mild melding of the four "Thai tastes"-sweet, salty, sour and spicy-nirvana lies in the artfully heaped curry with tofu and vegetables. If you're in the mood for something different, try the surprisingly moist whole fried bass or the more exotic sautéed crispy duck, known as pet kapraw."
—Time Out New York
"It's a stylish restaurant with cooking that raises the place above the ordinary ... even managing to put a new spin on old favorites like pad thai."
