Featuring the best skillet-fried chicken in Nashville, Monell's offers family-style communal dining with Southern-style food meant for comfort. Michael King opened the flagship restaurant in 1995 in a stately, restored Victorian house in the Germantown neighborhood. He later added locations in Franklin and Gallatin and a convenient Monell's Express on Nashville's Franklin Pike, and in August 2009 added Cafe Monell's on Bransford Avenue in Berry Hill. Family-style means you sit at a big table, pass the heaping bowls of well-prepared, Southern-style meats and sides to your left, and try to behave yourself among brand-new friends. (That means turn your cell phones off!) The heavenly fried chicken is offered at every meal, including weekend country breakfasts/brunches. Fried catfish is another favorite on Fridays and Saturdays. Pot roast, chicken and dumplings, spinach lasagna, barbecued ribs and chicken, and meat loaf are other entrées on the revolving menu of three daily entrées, three or four salads, four or five hot vegetables, along with cornbread and rolls, beverages and dessert. Reservations not accepted. No alcohol available. Nashville and Franklin locations serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner Tue–Sat, with country breakfast/brunch served 8:30 am–1 pm Sat and 8:30–11 am Sun. Sun meal 11 am–4 pm. Gallatin location serving lunch Fri, dinner Fri–Sat. Sun meal 11 am–3 pm. Closed Mon–Thu. Monell's Express serving lunch Mon–Fri (closes at 2 Mon–Thur, 6 pm Fri). Closed Sat–Sun. Cafe Monell's serving breakfast and lunch daily, early dinner (until 7 pm) Mon–Fri.
