You'll be lucky to score one of the few parking spots in front of this small East Nashville barbecue and soul food joint, not that this has dissuaded its many neighborhood regulars. Bailey & Cato's barbecue pit roils with smoke of such sweet intensity you'll find it tough to order anything other than the outstanding barbecued country-style pork ribs, available every day with two sides, as is the well-executed fried chicken. The smoked chicken and smoked pork shoulder can be had only on occasion and are highly recommended, as is fried catfish on Fridays and salmon croquettes on Thursdays. (Printed B&C menus should be on every refrigerator door on that side of the Cumberland River, if not the entire city.) The most scintillating side items include the collard greens, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, and the cooked cabbage, the latter of which brought profane praise from the rock band Guster on its website after the band cut an album in the neighborhood and then became regulars. Save room for banana pudding. The takeout window out front gets a workout with plates, sandwiches, ribs by the slab and chickens by the half or whole. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sun. Closed Mon.
