If they don't make places like The Picnic Cafe anymore, it's because there's not really a place for them these days. Except, thankfully, in Nashville. Owner and former school teacher Kathy Bonnet's takeout and sit-down restaurant moved across a Belle Meade shopping center parking lot in late 2006 to its new stand-alone location that once housed a laundromat. Afternoon diners at The Picnic Cafe continue to feast on sublime (and sensibly priced) versions of pimiento cheese and chicken salad sandwiches, herbed tomato soup, chicken and artichoke casserole, creamed chicken over cornbread, and other Southern-style classics. Accompany with heavenly fresh-baked yeast rolls and a tall glass of fruit tea that may be Nashville's best. No alcohol available. Serving from 8 am–5 pm Mon–Sat, with lunch served 11 am–5 pm. Closed Sun.
