Nashvillians craving the distinctive hot dog experience best enjoyed from Manhattan street stands or Chicago storefronts have finally found their spot. Relative-newcomer Hot Diggity Dogs is co-owned by Gayle Davis and Chicago native Layla Vartanian, who sold hot dogs outside her Lower Broadway rockabilly honky-tonk, Layla's Bluegrass Inn, a few years ago. Hot Diggity Dogs features steamed and chargrilled Vienna-brand beef dogs served in such classic styles as Chicago (yellow mustard, onion, tomato, bright-green relish, dill pickle, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt), New York (sauerkraut, onions and mustard) and Boston (baked beans, onions and melted cheese), among others. Chicago dog purists will go for the steamed, but Layla doesn't bat an eye when you order the Chicago charred. Only the not-quite-authentic buns give away the fact that this is Music City. Italian and polish sausages, an excellent Italian beef sandwich, and vegetarian dogs are also available. Extra credit awarded for the crisp, freshly cut fries, which are even better topped with the melted, Velveeta-like cheese. Hot Diggity Dogs' quaint, colorfully refurbished two-story house, located in an otherwise hardscrabble industrial area just south of downtown, has limited indoor seating but does boast plenty of free parking as well as four outdoor picnic tables with umbrellas to help beat the heat.
