Iranian immigrant Mohammad "Mo" Karimy was thinking drive-through diner rather than fast-food monolith when he and wife Shiva opened the first of their many Nashville-area Fat Mo's hamburger joints on Murfreesboro Pike in 1991. The original remains the only one with indoor seating, although a picnic table or two are available at other sites. If there's a line of cars waiting, chances are an eager-to-please employee will leap out the door to take your order as you approach the drive-through window. The wait, only a few minutes, is well worth it for the gargantuan Fat Mo's Burger, which comes standard as a half-pounder. (They offer bigger and smaller burgers, for bigger and smaller appetites.) Everything's cooked to order and served piping hot. A few truisms: Do pay a little extra for the spicy fries. Don't go with the smaller soda. Do go with the soft-serve shakes. Don't be afraid to order the other items, which include chicken wings and chicken sandwiches. And the thinly sliced beef sandwich is a mighty fine rendition of a classic Philly cheese steak, with melted cheese, mushrooms and grilled onions along for the ride. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Hours may vary by location.
