After his longtime Mississippi gulf coast seafood restaurant was wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, chef/owner John "Chappy" Chapman picked up and moved his operation to Nashville. The result is Chappy's on Church, open since late spring 2006 in an old flooring store. The upscale-casual New Orleans design spares little expense, from the deep-cushioned chairs in the bar area to the nicely appointed dining room to the near-cloth quality hand towels in the restrooms. This is not a place for halter tops and sportswear, even at lunch. Nevertheless, the convivial Chappy, who prowls the dining area several times an hour greeting patrons, helps keep the mood free and easy, as in the Big Easy. His extensive, seafood-dominated Creole-style menu shows care and flair in the kitchen. Recommendations include seafood gumbo, turtle soup, raw oyster cocktail and shrimp rémoulade as starters; the bountiful fried seafood platter (soft-shell crab, shrimp, oysters, sea scallops and catfish), barbecued shrimp, grilled quail and veal Alexander (grilled veal with crabmeat stuffing). Prices are comparable to American contemporary competition, but portions are substantial, and wines by the bottle and particularly by the glass are real bargains. Reservations suggested. Live jazz nightly. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner nightly. Sun champagne brunch 11 am–3 pm.
