Rescued from dormancy several years ago by former music industry attorney and transplanted New Yorker Claire Mullally, West Nashville institution Bobbie’s Dairy Dip is under new ownership but remains its crowd-pleasing self. Housed in a retro ice cream hut – think early, rustic Dairy Queen or A&W – Bobbie’s brief closing after more than 50 years meant many long, tear-stained hours for locals looking for great chili dogs and chocolate shakes. Recent years would have to be considered some of the Dip’s finest hours, though. The butterfat content has been pumped up on the soft-serve ice cream (vanilla, chocolate or swirl), and all the shakes and desserts satisfy mightily. Dipped cones live up to their top billing, particularly when in a waffle cone, with chocolate, espresso or peanut butter coating. The hot fudge sundae is as described: "really rich, really hot and really delicious." And good to remember that sprinkles are always free at Bobbie’s – just ask for them. Of the specialties, the Banana Boat – ice cream, featuring bananas, caramel, strawberry and chocolate sauces, topped with whipped cream, nuts and maraschino cherries – truly is the bomb. Also mightily recommended are the house-made hot fudge cake and strawberry short cake, both topped with vanilla ice cream. Everything’s takeout, with limited picnic bench seating outside. Specialties include great cheeseburgers (they taste like they’ve just come off your backyard grill, with homegrown tomatoes atop in season), chicken sandwiches, chili dogs, onion rings, crisp Belgian-style (twice-fried) fries and especially recommended sweet potato fries. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner daily, except closed for a month or two during winter.
