The sign out front warns about parking lot potholes. The cook answers to, simply, "Grandma." And the oversized sourdough yeast rolls are some of the best you’ll ever put in your mouth. A lunchtime regular proclaims, "I’ve been out of the country for awhile, and once I got back, this is the first place I wanted to visit." That’s Barbara’s Home Cooking, a small converted house off Hillsboro Pike that began as a catering operation and has since become one of Williamson County’s most cherished if under publicized Southern food purveyors. Meat-and-three plates feature three entrées that change daily. Skillet-fried chicken tops the list two or three times a week, with a brown gravy-dredged country-fried steak and fried catfish other regulars. Soups, salads, chicken tenders, chicken salad and pimento cheese sandwiches are other offerings. Prime rib and steak are offered Friday night and Sunday lunch only. Fudge, pecan and chess pie are offered daily, and by all means, order either the apple pie or blueberry cobbler if they’re offered. A bag of day-old yeast rolls are bargain-priced – if there are any left to be had. There is indoor and outdoor seating. No alcohol available. Serving lunch Sun–Fri, dinner Mon–Fri. Closed Sat.
