Be warned about the parking lot potholes. The cook answers to, simply, "Grandma." And the oversized sourdough yeast rolls are some of the best you'll ever put in your mouth. A lunchtime regular proclaims, "I've been out of the country for awhile, and once I got back, this is the first place I wanted to visit." That's Barbara's Home Cooking, a small converted house off Hillsboro Pike outside suburban Franklin that began as a catering operation and has since become one of Williamson County's most cherished Southern food purveyors. Meat-and-three plates feature three entrées that change daily. Skillet-fried chicken tops the list each day, with a brown gravy-dredged country-fried steak and fried catfish other regulars. Soups, salads, chicken tenders, chicken salad and pimiento cheese sandwiches are other offerings. Oh, and the mashed potatoes have been written up by Southern Living magazine. Prime rib and steak are offered for Sunday lunch only. Fudge, pecan and chess pies are offered daily, and by all means, order either the blackberry or peach cobbler if they're available. A bag of day-old yeast rolls are bargain-priced – if there are any left to be had. Barbara's still runs a hefty full-service catering business for events of all kinds and sizes, from afternoon tea to formal weddings. No alcohol available. Serving lunch Sun–Fri, dinner Mon–Fri. Closed Sat.
