Athens Family Restaurant, a Greek diner housed in the former site of a fast food chain, quickly drew raves from the area's restaurant critics and a growing customer fan base upon its late-2004 opening thanks to sturdy, Greek-style home cooking and one of the best breakfasts in the city. Specialties of the house include moussaka (eggplant casserole), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), pastichio (a Greek lasagna), soutzoukakia (meatballs and tomato sauce over rice) and spanakopita (spinach pie). The gyro sandwich and chicken or pork souvlaki are excellent sandwiches. Vegetarians have a number of fine choices, including the Greek salad or baked eggplant. Freshly made desserts include baklava, rice pudding, cream caramel or bougatsa, which is house-made custard wrapped in phyllo dough and topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon and served with fresh fruit. Steaks, chops and seafood have bolstered the dinner menu. But if you have just one visit to Athens, make it breakfast, which is served until 2:30 pm daily. In particular, we can heartily recommend the Greek omelet, corned beef hash, Texas French toast and banana pancakes. No alcohol available, but BYOB with no corking fee. Kids' menu. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner Mon–Tue, open 24 hours Wed–Sat. Closes 2 pm Sun.
