Simple pleasures abound at funky little The Alleycat Lounge & Tex Mex Grill, tucked just behind a restaurant- and bar-heavy East Nashville corner. First off, it's a great neighborhood bar: Alternative rock plays continuously in the background as cocktails flow. Best to arrive hungry, though. The lunch and dinner menus are short but substantial, featuring stalwart renditions of Tex-Mex favorites such as fajitas, enchiladas and nachos. But the two must-order items are the signature fried avocado, and the drunken chicken plate. The former features a whole avocado, peeled, stuffed with salsa, breaded, deep-fried and served with tortilla chips. (Ask for an extra basket of chips – this stuff is rich, filling and addictive.) The latter boasts a pan-seared chicken breast, marinated in lemon, lime and tequila and stuffed with a three-cheese mousse, with Mexican rice and a fabulous three-bean salad heaped on the side. Alleycat also features one of Nashville's best patios and most underrated weekend brunches. (Try the Eggs Benny and the Paris, Texas Toast.) 21-and-under admission since smoking is allowed. Live music 8–11 pm Sun. Full bar features a number of beers on tap. Serving lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Sat–Sun brunch 10 am-2 pm.
