There are those who say that Korean is the comfort food of Asian cuisine. Next time you have a craving for meat loaf and mashed potatoes, head to King's Restaurant and order the bi bim bop (meat, vegetables and egg cooked in a hot stone bowl with rice) instead – a more than satisfactory substitute. Other than the mirrored and orange-neon karaoke corner, the restaurant is quiet and nondescript, light on architectural details, like the strip mall in which it's located. The food itself is bright and varied. Every table gets panchan, a procession of small dishes of pickles and preserves. There are no hard-and-fast rules on how to eat them. You can use them as condiments to liven up rice and meat or as appetizers. Perhaps Korea's best-known entrée, barbecued meat called bulgogi, is delicious at King's. Both the beef and pork versions are marinated in a complex, sweet and nutty sauce. The haemul pajeon sounds intimidating but is simply a savory pancake filled with seafood and scallions. Giant bowls of fiery soup – yukgaejang, made with brisket, scallions and vegetables, for example – are Korea's answer to chicken noodle soup. Reservations not accepted. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Bar open late-night. Voted Best Korean Restaurant in the 2009 City Pages critics' poll.
